MARQUETTE — Joe Ostrowsky’s 15 points helped Marquette down Ishpeming 71-38 Tuesday night on the Redmen’s homecourt.

Marquette was without their head coach Brad Nelson due to illness, but assistant coach Jay Peterson was proud to win his first game filling in as the head coach.

“It was a tough first half and Ishpeming played really well most of the night,” Peterson said. “Our guys came into the second half with a lot of energy that carried us.”

The Redmen outscored the Hematites 27-10 in the third quarter to take a commanding 56-30 lead and put the game out of reach.

“We started playing harder and started running the floor with our defense,” Peterson said.

Treylon McFerrin also reach double-digit scoring for Marquette, racking up 13 points, while Alex DuVall also scored 12.

Westwood 49, Gwinn 30

At Gwinn, the Patriots quieted Gwinn’s offense on the road as WHS’ Nathan Beckman led all scorers with 15 points and teammate Austin Pierpont had 10.

But the story of the night was Westwood’s defense, which held the Modeltowners to single-digits scoring in all four quarters.

“Our kids came out and played hard from start to finish,” Westwood head coach Chad Hewitt said. “We held a good Gwinn team with great height in check all night with our defense.

“We were unselfish, and it was probably our best team performance all year.”

For the Modeltowners, head coach Jim Finkbeiner said he expects more out of his players.

“I can’t put my finger on what happened,” Finkbeiner said. “At this point of the season, we need to be scoring more than 30 points a game. We didn’t execute, weren’t aggressive and didn’t play the game the way we know it.”

Reed Wiedenhoefer scored 12 points for Gwinn in their loss.

The Patriots have a quick turnaround, as they travel to Mid-Peninsula Conference frontrunner Norway on Thursday, then host Negaunee on Friday.

Hewitt said his team needs to prepare for the tough challenge of the condensed schedule as the regular season nears an end in the coming weeks.

“It’s a tough stretch, but you expect that at the end of the season,” Hewitt said. “We’re concentrating on keeping everybody healthy and focused on basketball.”

Munising 67, Rapid River 58

At Rapid River, the Mustangs held leads of 25-24 at halftime and 46-40 after three quarters in this Skyline Central Conference game.

“There are things we do in practice that we didn’t apply tonight,” Rockets’ coach Rich Poma said. “As far as our transition defense, I’ll put that one on myself. We did a lot of good things, but our biggest problem is we didn’t play with intensity.”

Cade Contreras scored 27 points for the Mustangs (14-2, 9-2 Skyline). Teammate Jesse Matson added 15 and Anthony Mattson 12.

“Contreras got his feet set and knocked his shots down,” Poma said. “I was very impressed with the way he played.”

Logan Hardwick tossed in 25 points and Daren Landis added 12 for the Rockets (5-10, 3-6), who hit 24 of 64 field goals and committed 13 turnovers.

The Mustangs sank 21 of 54 shots and had just four miscues.

Munising, which also won the JV game though no score was available, hosts Superior Central on Friday. Rapid River plays at the Cougars a day earlier on Thursday.

Calumet 72, L’Anse 48

At Calumet, the Copper Kings kept hold of first place in the West PAC with two games remaining.

“It’s nice to be sitting where we are and to have the final two games at home,” head coach Mike Ojala said of Calumet (12-4, 5-1 West PAC). “L’Anse is a scary team that can put up points in a hurry. We’re happy to be where we’re at.”

Logan Fish led L’Anse (5-10, 1-5) with with 12 points as the Purple Hornets shot 18 of 50 for 36 percent from the field. Calumet’s Matt Ojala led all scorers with 22 points.

The Copper Kings managed to gain a 33-20 halftime advantage.

“We had a lot of sick kids tonight and had no legs,” L’Anse head coach Kyle Koski said. “We stuck around for the first half, but Calumet just wore us out in the second half.”

L’Anse goes to West Iron County on Friday.
