IRONWOOD — Two girls teams made moves in opposite directions today in the weekly high school basketball polls released today by the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

Baraga (17-2) received five first-place votes and moved back into the No. 1 spot in the Class D rankings this week, displacing former No. 1 Forest Park (16-4). The Trojans lost at Bark River-Harris, 73-60.

In Class ABC, Marquette (17-3) lost at Negaunee 54-53 last week and slipped back a spot to No. 3, falling behind No. 2 Houghton (19-1). Last week, the Redettes bypassed the Gremlins in the poll by beating them in Marquette, 43-40.

Munising (20-0) collected five first-place votes and remained atop the ABC girls ranks with its perfect record.

With girls teams playing in their district tournaments this week, this was the final U.P. girls poll of the season.

The boys will have one more poll next week, since they don’t begin district play until then.

In Class ABC, No. 1 Marquette (17-1) and No. 4 Negaunee (14-4) held their spots from last week. The biggest shakeup was in Class D, where North Central has been no surprise as the No. 1 team all season.

But Pickford from the eastern U.P. and Jeffers from the west displaced the teams that had been Nos. 2 and 3 most of the season, Carney-Nadeau and Bark River-Harris of the Skyline Central Conference.

There was no Associated Press girls state poll this week, and no area teams appeared in the final AP boys poll.
