The Mountaineers were led by Carson Wonders, who broke the 1,000-point barrier on Monday against Stephenson, with 26 points.

“They’re quick, they’re long, they’re athletic. We just weren’t able to match that tonight,” Westwood coach Chad Hewitt said. “For us to be successful and win, we have to outwork our opponents because (we’re) not necessarily more athletic than teams that we play.

“We have to do everything right every possession and do things right all the time. We just ran into a team that has some really good players.”

In addition to Wonders, Iron Mountain (5-1, 4-1 MPC) got 21 points from Jaden Vicenzi. Wonders and Charlie Gerhard grabbed seven of IM’s 27 boards.

“Carson got off to a real good start and Jaden was real steady throughout,” Iron Mountain coach Harvey “Bucky” Johnson said. “The other guys played their roles pretty well. Our free throw shooting wasn’t as good as it has been.”

Westwood’s dribble-drive offense didn’t find the lanes it hoped, according to Hewitt. The Patriots were held to single-digits scoring in each of the first three quarters.

“We played pretty good defense. At the halftime score they had 16 points and at the end of the third quarter they had 22 points,” Johnson said. “I thought defensively we played pretty well. They were trying to do some things that we haven’t played against. They were dribble driving the ball and handing it off. They did it effectively.”

Iron Mountain held a 35-16 halftime lead.

Nathan Beckman led Westwood with 12 points, while teammate Austin Pierpont added six.

The Mountaineers shot 24 of 48 for the game, including 5 of 13 from long range.

Iron Mountain also won the JV game, 46-38.
