Westwood Patriots boys basketball team finds shooting touch in overtime to down L’Anse, 62-54

HOUGHTON — Westwood made 8 of 9 shots in the extra period to defeat L’Anse 62-54 in overtime in a boys basketball game played Monday night.

Nathan Beckman had 17 points for the Patriots, who were just 19 of 50 from the floor in the game.

“Our kids played really hard until the end,” Westwood head coach Chad Hewitt said. “We battled back from some deficits in the second and third quarters, and almost had a chance to win at the end of regulation.

“Our play picked up in overtime and we were lights out. We’re in a good spot.”

David Delarye added 13 points to the winning effort, while L’Anse (1-1) sophomore Logan Fish led all scorers with 27 points as another Purple Hornets’ sophomore, Louis Bogda, added 11.

Chassell 68, Republic-Michigamme 42

At Republic, a strong second half propelled the visiting Panthers, who led 25-14 at halftime before outscoring R-M 43-28 after that.

Junior Dylan Hanninen paced the Hawks with 11 points, while Kasey Ball added nine and AJ Ball and James Rosenbaum had eight apiece.

Abe Gockenbach led the Panthers with 23 points, while Kersten Kytta added 14 and Hunter Rautiola 11.

“The second half, our pressure eventually got to them and we were able to open up a comfortable lead,” Chassell head coach Bill Sleeman said. “We were able to get everybody involved, and everybody made a contribution, offensively and defensively.”
