Second Sunday Folk Dance Concert
CRYSTAL FALLS - The Second Sunday Folk Dance will present a concert by Chris Kokesh and LJ Booth at 4 p.m. CST. Feb. 9 at the Fortune Lake Camp, Crystal Falls.
White Water opens the event with a short concert and will be joined by Carrie, Emma, and Susan Dlutkowski.
Music for the dance portion of the evening will be by The Front Parlor Dance Band with dance calling by Steve Kickert.
Wisconsin native LJ Booth has received significant acclaim as a songwriter. Hailing from Portland, Ore. Chris Kokesh developed her chops as the fiddle player for Misty River, a band that toured in the Northwest for 15 years. The duo combines LJ's distinctive guitar playing and Chris' s vibrant fiddling with sparkling harmony singing and great songs.
The Folk Dance will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is $7 for adult and children 15 and under are free.
An old time music jam session lead by fiddler Bob Arthur will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the dining hall.
Bring an instrument, including your voice, and play along. There is no charge for the jam session.

'Meet the Beetles' to perform
CALUMET - Meet The Beetles, a tribute band, will be performing at 1 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Calumet Theatre, Calumet.
Meet The Beetles will be performing all the hit songs The Beatles played on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964.

Chocolate Festival held at NMU
MARQUETTE - The Superior Alliance for Independent Living Chocolate Festival will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Great Lakes Rooms of Northern Michigan University, Marquette.
All proceeds benefit the Single Point for Activities and Recreation inclusive social and recreation program. The Festival is for all ages and offers chocolate tastes, live entertainment, a silent auction and door prizes.

MARQUETTE -The Volunteer Tax Assistance Program will help citizens of Marquette and the surrounding areas with their federal income taxes from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 9 through April 13.
Qualified Beta Alpha Psi members will electronically file basic returns for wage earners of under $52,000 per year. Assistance will be available at the Marquette Room of the University Center of Northern Michigan University, Marquette and in the Shiras Room of the Peter White Public Library, Marquette. Each filer must bring photo identification, a social security card for each relevant party, any relevant documentation of wages or income (W2, 1099-T), and a copy of last year's return. Marquette City Band to perform

U.P.?Choral Leadership Award
MARQUETTE - The Marquette Choral Society seeks nominations for its annual Upper Peninsula Choral Leadership Award.
Nominations must be submitted by Feb. 10 in writing, and provide evidence that the nominee has at least 10 years service to choral music in the Upper Peninsula and has demonstrated excellence in teaching, conducting, and/or support for quality choral music in the Upper Peninsula. The award may be posthumously presented, a maximum of two awards per year may be granted, and a person cannot receive the award more than once.

Behind-the-scenes at Donckers

Registration for kindergarten
ISHPEMING - The Ishpeming School District will be conducting kindergarten registration for the 2014-2015 school year March 5 through March 7 at the Birchview Elementary School, Ishpeming.
The Marquette County Health Department will conduct hearing and vision screenings as part of the registration process. Parents must have the child's birth certificate and immunization record at the time of registration.
Parents with children who will be 5 on or before Oct. 1, are requested to call the Birchview Elementary School at 485-6341 between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. to schedule an appointment.
If the child will turn 5 between Oct. 1 and Dec. 1 and the child appears ready for Kindergarten, the parent may fill out a waiver.
