Killer Whales finish second in Iron Mountain

MARQUETTE - Members of the YMCA of Marquette Killer Whales swim team finished runner-up at the annual Iron Mountain Polar Plunge on Jan. 4.

Colin Vanderschaaf, 8, led the way with four first place finishes and three team records.

Vanderschaaf won the 100-yard freestyle with a 1:13.55 swim. He also placed first in the 50 breaststroke, 45.86; 25 free, 15.18; and 50 freestyle, 33.95.

His first three wins lowered team records he already owned.

Also winning multiple events for the Marquette YMCA were: Samantha Olson, 12, (100 butterfly, 1:19.88 and 200 freestyle, 2:24.43); Juan Schouten, 10, (500 freestyle, 9:00.88 and 200 freestyle, 3:15.30); and Jayme Winn, 11, (100 freestyle, 1:13.90 and 400 IM, 6:36.19).

Other event winners were: Delaney Marchiol (200 freestyle); Daniel Schouten (200 IM); Grace Sobczak (100 IM); Carson Vanderschaaf (100 breaststroke, 1:49.52, team record); and Erin Vanderschaaf, 10, (100 IM).

Killer Whales earning medals for a top-three finish were Chase Hoel, Archer Olson, Ella Pond, Charlie Potts, Rachel Schouten, Dorothy Piper Smart, Lauren Stoken and Hannah Winn.
