Prep volleyball: Superior Central claims its share of CUP title

EBEN - Superior Central secured its share of the Central Upper Peninsula Conference championship by sweeping Mid Peninsula 3-0 in a high school volleyball match played Thursday night.

The Cougars finished 13-1 in the CUP to share the title with Munising after the teams split their matches during the season.

Thursday's win was 25-21, 25-23, 25-23 as every SC player had a kill, led by Vanessa Freberg with 13, Brianna Emard nine and Brooke Pasanen eight. Emard also had two blocks and Pasanen four aces and six digs.

Freberg led all servers with 15 points and four aces, adding in five digs, an assist and a block. Teammate Emilee Lintula had four aces, two kills and three digs, while Ally Bray had 26 assists, three kills, two digs and two aces;

"(Mid Peninsula) kept it close with some strong serving and by catching (us) off-guard defensively," SC coach Kris Bray said. "Fortunately, the Cougars offense was really strong and very well balanced."

SC won the JV match, 25-10, 25-21.
