Alton James Tallman

MUNISING, MI. - Alton James Tallman, age 89, of Munising, Michigan, passed away at the Northland Lutheran Retirement Community in Marinette, Wisconsin on October 22, 2013, after a long illness. He enjoyed life to the fullest as long as he could.

He was born March 22, 1924, in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, the son of Rudolph and Hattie (Wilson) Tallman. Jim was raised in Fairport, Michigan and attended schools in Garden, Michigan, in the Upper Peninsula.

Jim was a proud veteran having served in the Army and Navy during World War II and was a Merchant Marine until he retired in 1969. While on shore leave, he met and married Annie Marie Ratcliff of New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1945. They had two children, Rebecca Tallman Rollins and Alton James Tallman, Jr. Several years after Marie's death in 1957, he married Lita Joy Morrison of Munising, Michigan, in 1970. They enjoyed traveling to Florida in the winter and playing cards with friends. After 43 years of marriage, Lita passed away in January of 2011.

He was an active member of the American Legion Post 131 and the Knights of Columbus. Recently he was a Grand Marshal for the Fourth of July parade in Munising, Michigan, and was one of the oldest veterans of World War II living in Munising at that time.

Jim is survived by his daughter, Rebecca (Dean) Rollins of Marinette, Wisconsin; son, Alton James (Catherine) Tallman, Jr. of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; several grandchildren, Scott Robbins, Julie (Robin) Buelteman, Chad Detert, Jamie (Hilary) Tallman and Myrle Marie (Jeff) Bongiovanni; and great-grandchildren, Brandon, Jordan and Zachary Buelteman, Olliva and Henry Weaver, Zachary Robbins, and Michael James Bongiovanni. He is further survived by his sisters, Ann Barbeau and Katherine (Kass) Peterson of Munising and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wives, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert, Roger, Burton, Ronald and Bud; and sister, Ethelyn Thill.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. 12 noon, on Friday, October 25, 2013, at St. John the Baptist Church in Garden, Michigan. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 noon, in the church, with Father Antony Lukka officiating. A luncheon will follow the mass in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be in New Garden Cemetery in Garden Township.

Pall bearers for Jim are Jamie Tallman, Julie Buelteman, James Peterson, Randy Tallman, Wayne Thill and Kirk Tallman. Serving as honorary pall bearers will be Scott Robbins, Chad Deter, Robin Buelteman, Jeff Bongiovanni, Dean Tallman, Jerry Thill, Richard St. Amour, Dwayne French, Ted Fulcher, Maynard Robbins, Dean Barbeau, Ed Peters and Joe Peterson.
