MARQUETTE - The Superior Health Foundation and Marquette Area Public Schools are teaming up during October for the 31 Days of Pink to raise money for a U.P.-wide Breast Health Fund.
During October, The Spirit Store at Marquette Senior High School is selling pink T-shirts and wristbands to raise money for the Superior Health Foundation. The Superior Health Foundation reached out to day sponsors to help support the cause.
During the month, MSHS fall athletic teams are wearing pink and selling merchandise at their games all in an effort to create awareness about Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
"We're elated to partner with MAPS on such a worthwhile cause," said Jim LaJoie, executive director of the Superior Health Foundation. "We started with MSHS because when you mix red and white, you get pink. Going forward, our goal in future years is to 'Paint the Peninsula Pink' and encourage other schools from across the U.P. to be a part of the 31 Days of Pink."
The 31 Days of Pink will culminate with a "Pink Party" at 7 p.m. Friday when the Marquette Senior High School varsity football team hosts Menominee. That evening, pink merchandise will be sold, valuable silent auction prizes will be available, fans will have an opportunity to participate in a fun football contest for a chance to win two fabulous prizes and players' pink jerseys will be auctioned off. In addition, a special halftime event is being planned to honor breast cancer survivors.
"This is a chance for the athletic department and the kids to help out a community event and a community group, the Superior Health Foundation, and people in need," MSHS Athletics Coordinator Jamie Tuma said.
