Prep volleyball: Ishpeming splits triangular against Superior Central, Houghton

ISHPEMING - A 2-0 win over Superior Central enabled the Ishpeming High School girls volleyball team to gain a split in a triangular meet held in Ishpeming on Thursday.

The 25-23, 25-16 triumph over the Cougars raised the Hematites' overall record to 8-13-6.

Earlier, IHS fell to Houghton in three sets, 21-25, 25-6, 25-16. In the other match, Houghton dropped SC in two sets, 25-16, 25-23.

Against SC, Mollie Pruett collected 18 assists to go with two kills and two digs. Jessica Spencer added eight kills. three digs and an ace, while Sinead Korvela recorded five kills and three digs.

"It was a slow pace, but everyone played well," IHS coach Amy Rautiola said. "We were down 23-19 in the first set, but were able to come back as the girls played mentally well.

"In the second set, we had the momentum. Superior Central got tired and we took advantage of that."

In their loss to the Gremlins, the Hematites got 11 kills and two digs from Spencer; 26 assists and two aces from Pruett; five kills and 10 digs from Korvela; and four kills and two digs from Tammy Simula.

"We came out with great intensity (against Houghton)," Rautiola said. "Our passes were there and our hitting was on.

"The second set, we just couldn't get any momentum going and didn't play well at all.

"We picked it up the third set, but Houghton had all the momentum," she added.

No stats were available for Houghton or SC.

In junior varsity action, Houghton beat Ishpeming (25-14 and 25-14) and Superior Central (25-8. 25-14), SC downed Ishpeming (25-20 and 25-19).

Munising 3, Mid Peninsula 0

At Rock Thursday, the Mustangs improved to 11-1 overall and in the Central U,P. Conference with a 25-12, 25-23, 25-20 league win over the host Wolverines.

Frankie Mattson recorded three kills and eight aces for the Mustangs of coach Josh Cole. Karlee Decet contributed six kills and an ace; Megan Watson totaled nine digs and three aces; and Bailey Downs added four aces and nine assists.

"In the first game, we had some nice passing and executed our offense well," Cole said, "while in the second, we served probably our best all year but struggled in everything else."

The coach said Downs came up big in the third game.

"She had a huge serving run," he said. "She had seven points, including three of her aces."

In JV play, Munising won 2-0 (25-13, 26-24).
