Save the fountain

September 29, 2013
The Mining Journal

To the Journal editor:

We respectfully request that the Downtown Development Authority Board and the city of Marquette live up to their agreement to maintain the Jayne Hiebel Memorial Fountain in the Marquette Commons.

It is unfortunate that the DDA did not discuss this matter with the various stakeholders before their decision to remove the fountain was announced in The Mining Journal on Aug. 20.

The fountain was filled with water and the tree was dripping water (as designed) earlier this year. What has changed since then to make the fountain a public hazard and prompt Mona Lang to say, "I instructed the yellow caution tape (as a) safety precaution to keep people away from the deteriorating concrete and the potentially contaminated water that remains in the basin."?

As contributors to the fountain's creation and as community members concerned about public art, we feel the Jayne Hiebel Fountain in the Marquette Commons should not be destroyed.

Our concern has led us to have a concrete contractor, a plumbing contractor and a restoration specialist look at the fountain. It was their opinion that the fountain could be made fully functional and restored to its original appearance.

We have talked with a number of people about the fountain and feel donations can be obtained to restore the fountain. I am spearheading this effort, but it would require time.

We are asking the DDA board to put off any decision to remove the fountain until spring so our committee of concerned citizens can get restoration bids, secure donations and make an agreement with the Marquette DDA for restoration.

We respectfully request that the DDA board and the city of Marquette live up to their agreement to maintain the Jayne Hiebel Memorial Fountain in the Marquette Commons.
