Attitude shift seen

September 9, 2013
Eugene R. Miller , The Mining Journal

To the Journal editor:

It is moving how troops are greeted on their return to the United States. They are greeted at the airport and they surprise their families at events disguised as a baseball catcher or a team mascot.

I did not have the honor of serving in Vietnam. I was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Springfield (CLG-7) in the Mediterranean for three years.

At that time, we were flagship for Six Fleet Command. You received orders and you obeyed them.

I have held out one hope for 40-odd years, that the girl who spit on me in Eau Claire, Wis., is now one of those at the airport saying, "Welcome Home."
