MARQUETTE - Visitors to Marquette's Tourist Park this weekend may feel as though they've gone back in time.

The park is playing host to dozens of Airstreams, vintage RVs that are now routinely spotted touring the country en masse.

On Thursday, 20 Airstreams rolled into town before parking at Tourist Park.

The group, Wisconsin Unit 116, is representing the Wally Byam Caravan Club International Airstream Owners RV Association. Trustee Jane Carmichael said the Airstream is, quite literally, a vehicle for people to explore their passions.

"The attraction, I think, is the group," she said. "They like to explore. They like to see new places and this is an avenue to do that."

Regional chapters of the WBCCI are common - there are three based in lower Michigan.

Today will bring an additional 15 campers to the park, this group hails from Ontario and is currently working on a circle tour around Lake Superior.

Carmichael, who helped organize the rally, said it is common for the Airstreams to draw interest from locals and she said that if people want to get a closer look, many of the RV owners are welcoming.

"It's the unique material of aluminum," she said when describing what makes Airstreams interesting. "It is the unique structure because they are rounded. And they last forever. They are the oldest trailer around."

Carmichael said members of the Canadian group will be set up in the park through late Monday or early Tuesday.
