MARQUETTE - Losses to the Flint Phantoms 98, the Allen Park Huskies 98 and the Grosse Pointe 98 Bulldogs in state championship play over the weekend in Dimondale ended the season for the Marquette American Legion Bantam AA hockey team.
Coach Brian Nebel's squad dropped a 4-0 decision to Flint, lost 4-1 to Allen Park and fell 7-2 to Grosse Pointe.
"The weekend didn't quite go as expected," Nebel said. "We knew it was an uphill battle playing No. 1-ranked Grosse Pointe and No. 11 - and eventual state champion - Allen Park.
"You have to be at the top of your game and have everybody healthy to compete against these teams."
Against Flint, Legion trailed 2-0 after two periods of play. Goaltender Travis Cameron made 23 stops for Marquette.
Shane Ring scored Legion's lone goal against Allen Park, which led 3-0 after two periods. Cameron came up with 11 saves and teammate Jack Eyler 18 for Legion.
Against Grosse Pointe, Chris LeMire and Nick Bink notched markers for Legion (32-27-8), which trailed 3-1 after one period and 5-1 after two. Justin Moyle, Spencer DenBeste and Shane Ring picked up assists for Marquette.
Cameron turned aside 41 shots in goal.
