CALUMET, Mich. - Donald Irving Gitzen, 72, a resident of Ishpeming, and most recently a resident of Garden View Assisted Living Facility in Calumet, passed away suddenly Sunday morning, February 24, 2013, at his Garden View home where he had been a resident patient for the past two years.
He was born January 11, 1941, in Nicollet, Minnesota, a son of the late Joseph Irving Gitzen and Minerva (Plowe) Gitzen of Ishpeming. As a child, Donald attended the Ishpeming Public Schools.
Donald was employed by the City of Ishpeming where he worked as a laborer for nearly 20 years, before retiring in the mid 1990s.
Donald enjoyed gatherings at his family camp on Fish Lake in Champion, Michigan. He liked to fish, attend family dinners during the holidays and snow shoveling was his passion. He was known as a kind and gentle man who enjoyed helping others.
His parents, Joseph (Irving) and Minerva Gitzen, preceded him in death.
Surviving are several cousins including his caretakers and guardian, Joan (Harbour) Petrelius and Dennis Harbour.
A private graveside service will be held later this spring at the Ishpeming Cemetery.
Donald's family would like to thank the staff and nurses from Garden View Assisted Living Facility in Calumet, Warner Creek Residential Care Facility in Palmer and staff at the Covington Rest Home in Covington for the care they provided Donald during his stay at each of these facilities.
