Six Northern Michigan Nordic skiers selected for NCAA Championships

MARQUETTE - The Northern Michigan University Nordic ski team qualified its full allotment of six skiers - three men and three women - for the NCAA Championships on March 6-9 in Middlebury, Vt., the Central Collegiate Ski Association announced Monday evening.

The NMU men's team will consist of junior Erik Soderman, junior George Cartwright and sophomore Kyle Bratrud while the women will be made up of junior Rosie Frankowski, junior Jordyn Ross and freshman Mary Kate Cirelli, who haild from Rutland, Vt.

Soderman is the defending NCAA National Champion in the freestyle while Cartwright is coming off a victory at the NCAA Central Regional in Houghton in the 15-kilometer freestyle over teammates Soderman and Braturd.

Both Frankowski and Ross finished on the podium Sunday in the freestyle at the regional, taking second and third, respectively. Frankowski was third and Ross was fourth in the 5K classic on Saturday as well.

The Northern men won the Central Regional title over the weekend by topping Alaska-Fairbanks, 130-123, while the Wildcat women took second to the Nanooks 129-124.

NMU won the overall Nordic ski regional title, 154-152 over UAF.

Incorrect regional scores were originally submitted and reported by The Mining Journal for print in Monday's edition.
