Aune A. LaForest

NEGAUNEE, Mich. - Aune A. LaForest, 94, formerly of 98 Croix St., Negaunee, passed away on Sunday, February 17, 2013, at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility with her loving family and facility's caring staff at her side. She had been a resident there since 2007.

Aune was born May 28, 1918, in Negaunee to Finnish immigrants Matti and Justiina (Ahonpaa) Aho, attended the Negaunee Schools, and was a lifelong resident. She married Arthur "Barney" LaForest on January 29, 1938. They enjoyed 57 years of marriage until his death in 1995. In her younger years Aune worked various part-time jobs for local restaurants and as a housekeeper for families in Negaunee and Ishpeming.

Mrs. LaForest was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Negaunee where she was confirmed in 1934. Her hobbies included crocheting and knitting, and she made beautiful doilies and afghans. She also enjoyed playing bingo with friends. Aune was a wonderful homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother. She had a great sense of humor and boundless energy.

Surviving are 2 sons: Donald (Sandi) LaForest of Negaunee, Francis (Icee) LaForest of Thailand; 1 daughter, Lois (Daniel) McCartney of Florida; 2 granddaughters: Terri Ann (Jason) O'Connor, Leah (Adam) Karki; 1 grandson, John (Karen) Hummel; 2 step-grandsons: John Hartman, Chris (Tara) Hartman; 9 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Aune was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; 2 granddaughters, Andrea and Missy LaForest; 1 grandson, Gene Harrison; a sister, Gertrude (Lloyd) Borlace; and a niece, Joan Morgan.

A memorial service to celebrate Aune's life will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church at a later date to be announced by the Koskey Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mrs. LaForest's memory.
