Mustangs capture competitive cheer title

MUNISING - Munising led an Upper Peninsula sweep of the MHSAA Division 4 district tournament in competitive cheer held at the Munising High School on Saturday.

The top four of the eight competing teams advance to regional action this Saturday in Muskegon. And the four that advanced were all four entered from the U.P.

The Mustangs won a three-round meet with 713.86 points, Manistique second with 710.50, Iron Mountain third with 695.46 and Norway fourth with 671.68. The Knights finished more than 18 points ahead of the top Lower Peninsula team, East Jordan.

This was the second district title earned by 21st-year MHS coach Cathy Mutter, according to school athletic director Dee Jay Paquette.

The top four teams at regional competition advance to the state finals to be held March 1-2 at the Delta Plex in Grand Rapids.
