GWINN - Marquette put up several numbers no team would be proud of, but overcame those problems to defeat Gwinn 56-40 in high school girls basketball on Saturday afternoon.
The Redettes (16-3) trailed 12-1 at one time and were still behind 12-3 at the end of the first quarter. But they caught up quickly in the second quarter, taking a 21-20 lead at halftime and extending it throughout the second half.
Part of the deficit might've been due to some faulty long-range shooting - MSHS made just 1 of 18 (6 percent) from 3-point range.
"Gwinn played hard the whole way through, and we didn't, not at the start," Redettes coach Ben Smith said. "But our girls battled back, we mixed in some different defenses and got a couple stops that helped us get back in it."
Modeltowners coach Ben Olsen lamented what could've been.
"We missed a lot of layups, otherwise it would've been closer," he said, citing a time in the second half when five in a row were missed.

"Our main focus was (MSHS sophomore) Hunter Viitala, and we held her to 11 points and only three field goals.
"Being down just a point at halftime to the No. 1 or No. 2 team in the U.P., well, that gives us an opportunity against the Marquettes, Negaunees and Ishpemings that we're looking for."
Normally her team's top scorer, Viitala did add seven rebounds, six assists and two steals to the winning effort as senior teammate Morgan Seibert led all players with 12 points and nine rebounds. Another senior, Liana Storm, made five steals and scored four points.
For Gwinn (7-11), senior Morgan Bruce had team highs of nine points and nine rebounds, while sophomore Jordyn Hutchens scored eight points.
Marquette also won the JV game, 62-27.
