NMU women slipping out of GLIAC basketball tourney picture

DETROIT - The Northern Michigan University women's basketball team dropped its fourth straight game, fell to 10th overall in the GLIAC and now sit a game back of eighth-place Malone and Saginaw Valley State with three regular season games to play after an 87-70 loss at Wayne State on Saturday in Detroit.

The Warriors (17-5 overall, 15-3 in GLIAC) led the Wildcats (11-12, 8-11) from start to finish, including 39-34 at halftime.

Wayne State bumped its lead to 11 points early in the second half, only to see NMU rally with an 8-0 run.

The Warriors found some breathing room with under five minutes to play via a 7-0 run.

NMU sophomore Alyssa Colla led the 'Cats with 16 points while sophomore Lauren Gruber had 13 points. Freshman Anna Liewen pitched in 11 points to go along with her eight rebounds. Sophomore Brooke Coenen also had eight rebounds. The Wildcats made 33 trips to the free throw line, hitting 20 of those attempts. The 'Cats shot 42.6 from the field.

For the Warriors, Pheabre Colbert led with 27 points off the bench. Talisha Bridges added 16 and Juanita Cochran rounded out the double digits with 10. Colbert also led all rebounders with 12, and Cochran had 11.
