City open house chance to ‘meet’ Marquette

February 5, 2013
The Mining Journal

An event tonight will provide a perfect opportunity for residents to get to know their city a little better.

Tiina Harris, the city's community services manager, said she hopes people attending the third annual Marquette City Open House will look beyond the buildings and parks to meet the people behind the scenes.

The open house - from 4 to 7 tonight at the Peter White Public Library Community Room and the entire arts center - is being hosted by the library and organized by the Marquette Arts and Culture Center.

"I am hoping the community comes to meet the human beings who work for the city," Harris said. "These people love and care for this city. They are very passionate about what they do and I want people to get to know them."

The event is designed to be a family-friendly evening. There'll be opportunities to meet the city manager, city commission members, the fire chief, police officials, Marquette Board of Light and Power and Superior Watershed Partnership representatives and many others.

All of the city's departments will be represented, giving residents a perfect chance to put faces to names and get to know the people behind the services they rely on.

Beyond being a learning opportunity, the open house is a chance to get involved. Representatives from the city's 24 committees and advisory boards will be there, and people can learn what these committees do and how to serve on them.

The open house should also be a one-stop clearing house for information on the city's future. Projects like the planned Presque Isle playground, the reconstructed Tourist Park and city transportation corridors will be discussed.

So get curious. Get involved. The city's opening its doors tonight, and we urge all residents to take the opportunity to find out what's inside.
