NEGAUNEE, Mich. - Arne Vernon "Barney" Mattson, 97, formerly of 808 Croix Street, Negaunee, died Wednesday evening, January 23, 2013, at the Eastwood Nursing Center.
Arne was born December 15, 1915, in Rock to Albert and Hilja (Peura) Mattson, grew up in Gwinn and attended Gwinn High School. He moved to Negaunee in 1944 and married Taimie E. Karvela on February 28, 1944. He was employed by Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company, starting at the Maas Mine and worked as an underground miner for 22 years. He also worked at the Republic Mine for 9 years and the Tilden Mine for 5 years before retiring in 1978.
Mr. Mattson was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Negaunee. In his younger years he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved the woods and outdoor photography. He most loved his time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Surviving are 2 children: Mari Carlson of Ishpeming and Don (Debbie) Mattson of Negaunee, 7 grandchildren: Christina and Ashley Carlson, Bryan Bjorne, D.J. (Kaitlyn) Mattson, Jodi (Andy) Skewis, Kelsi (Mike) Kinnunen and Dustin Mattson; a great grandson, Kyle M. Tull; a brother, Edwin Mattson of Gwinn, a sister, Eila Hill of Gwinn, numerous nieces and nephews. Arne was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Taimie on October 27, 2012, 2 brothers: Onni and Eino Mattson, 2 sisters: Helen Mattson and Aune Malette.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 28 at the Koskey Funeral Home with Rev. Marcia Solberg officiating. Interment will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends from 12:00 noon until the time of the service at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home on Monday.
