MARQUETTE - Senior Joe Iwanicki of Marquette was the lone Superiorland wrestler to win an individual championship as four other athletes finished as runners-up during the Upper Peninsula Championship high school wrestling meet held at Marquette Senior High School on Saturday.

Iwanicki won the 215-pound title with a 9-2 victory over Devin Olsen of Escanaba in a field of 18 schools. He earlier beat Pat Guffey of Norway by a pin and Curtis Labadie in a decision to reach the finals. Labadie finished third in the division.

Teamwise, the Redmen also had the best area finish, fifth with 125 points as Gladstone won the meet with 229 and Escanaba was second with 184.5. Other area scores included Negaunee and Manistique tying for 10th with 54 points, Munising 12th with 36, Ishpeming 14th with 34, Gwinn 16th with 30 and Westwood and Newberry tying for 17th with 25.

Iwanicki's senior teammate Curt Calovecchi lost in the finals at 171 to Galloway Thurston of St. Ignace, 6-1, while Negaunee's Tyler LaJoie was pinned by Travis Heller of Escanaba at 2:56 in the 152 title tilt.

The two Gonzalez brothers of Manistique who also made championship matches each lost those matches by a single point. Senior Mat Gonzalez lost to Steven Kymes of Sault Ste. Marie, 7-6, at 145, while sophomore Cole Gonzalez fell to Chris Briar of Menominee, 3-2, at 135.

Four more area wrestlers picked up third-place ribbons - Hunter Moore of Marquette at 125, Brody Rosten of Negaunee at 130, Jonathan Willey of Ishpeming at 140 and Cole Schultz of Westwood at 189. Moore, Willey and Schultz were knocked into the consolation bracket by the eventual winner at those weights. Rosten lost to the eventual runner-up.
