Sickness brings exam challenges

8-18 Media

I am a student at Marquette Senior High School and, as with all students, I'm required to take exams over everything I've learned at the end of each semester with 20 percent of the final grade based on those exams. Since I'm a sophomore, this past week was only my third time taking exams and I became stressed out about them.

Exams are stressful enough when I'm healthy, but this year I became sick right before them. I absolutely hate being sick and this was the worst time possible to get sick. My priorities were to do well on my exams and to study a lot. This past week it was difficult to focus on those priorities because I had to try to get rid of whatever it was that I was sick with. All I felt like doing was sleeping and watching movies. Sadly, I couldn't do that much. I took cough drops, took naps, and my mom made chicken noodle soup and gave me some Tylenol.

It made me feel a little better knowing that I wasn't the only one that was sick during Exam Week. In my American Literature class there were at least three other people who were sneezing and coughing.

Still, I feel I did the best I could under the circumstances. It was really not fun having to play my clarinet for my band class exam while I was sick.

This whole thing of being sick during Exam Week made me realize a few things:

- I should not go to school or rehearsal while I'm sick because I feel really bad all the time and I might get other people sick as well.

- When people give me tips about ways to keep myself healthy, I should listen. I know that I'm not going to touch my face much and I am going to wash my hands a lot more than I did before.

- I should not procrastinate. Because I didn't do it when I had time and when I was not sick, I had to write this column during Exam Week while I was sick. Not fun!

- Studying should be done every day. Cramming during Exam Week doesn't always work because sometimes napping is all my body wants to do when it's sick.

- Oh, one more: because I missed one day of exams, I had to take three the next day. I really don't like being sick! I'm definitely going to get a flu shot next year!
