Isadore R. ‘Ray’ Millar

MARQUETTE, Mich. - Isadore Raphael "Ray" Millar, age 102, of Marquette, entered eternal life Thursday morning, December 27, 2012, at the Norlite Nursing Center.

Ray was born May 26, 1910, in Manchester, New Hampshire, a son of Ruthenian immigrants, Mikils and Eva (Fabroska) Omelonowski. The family relocated to Ontario in 1917. Ray began working on the Great Lakes in 1935 as a deckhand and received his officer's license in 1942. He was captain of several Great Lakes Ore carriers for the Midland Steamship Line. From 1961 through 1977 he was a pilot for the Lakes Pilot Association, guiding foreign ships through the Welland Canal to the lightship past Port Huron.

While visiting his ill mother in the hospital, he met a nurse named Laura "Grace" Dougherty, and they were married in 1942. They made their home in Port Huron in 1947 and resided there until retiring to Florida in 1980. In 1998, the couple moved north to be close to family, residing at Lost Creek until moving to Norlite Nursing Center together. Ray was a member of the Masters, Mates, and Pilots Organization and the International Ship Masters Association.

Ray and Grace enjoyed attending the annual ISMA conventions throughout the Great Lakes and Ray was honored to be the Grand Lodge President in 1969. Throughout his life, Ray enjoyed his children's and grandchildren's involvement in hockey, watching the Detroit Red Wings, traveling with his wife and visiting his grandchildren.

Ray is survived by his daughter, Valerie (Stephen) Fisette of Marquette; a son, Robert D. Millar of East Barre, VT; four grandchildren, Alexander W. Millar, Leslie A. Millar, Joshua J. Fisette and Laura E. Fisette. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Laura Grace Millar on August 13, 2010; a son, Ronald R. Millar; a sister, Anna Mahoney; and brothers, Andrew, Michael, and Peter.

Honoring, Ray's request, a memorial service will be held at a later date.
