Victim in Alger County car crash identified

MUNISING - The victim of a two-car traffic crash in Alger County this morning was identified as Sarah Frances Gunderson, 25, of Thompson, N.D.

She was killed in an accident which occurred at 7:35 a.m. along M-28, on a hill about 1 mile west of Munising.

Police said Gunderson was driving westbound on M-28 in a 2008 Ford Focus when she was struck by an eastbound 2006 Pontiac G6 driven by Richard Vanverschaegen, 31, of Munising.

Gunderson died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash. Vanverschaegen was transported to Marquette General Hospital by Alger County EMS.He sustained a non-life threatening injuries.

Police said both drivers were wearing seat belts.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Munising detachment were investigating the crash this afternoon. Police said a preliminary investigation indicated Vanverschaegen's vehicle crossed the center line.

Officers from the Munising Police Department were on the scene until state police arrived. They were assisted by the Munising Fire Department and the Alger County Extrication Unit.

The highway was not closed to traffic.
