Group to discuss 'Dream of Earth'

MARQUETTE - The Transition Marquette County Reading Group will discuss "The Dream of the Earth" by Thomas Berry at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Conference Room at Peter White Public Library.

The discussion is open to everyone. It would help to have at least started to read the book.

Mystery book group to meet

MARQUETTE - Once Upon A Crime, a book club for mystery lovers, will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Dandelion Cottage Room at the Peter White Public Library. The club will discuss "Deadlock: a V I Warshawsky Mystery" by Sara Paretsky.

Manistique deacon to be ordained

MARQUETTE - Bishop Alexander K. Sample of the Diocese of Marquette ordained Marty Flynn as a transitional deacon in December 2011 and will ordain him to the priesthood at 3:30 p.m. Friday at St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette.

After his ordination, Flynn will celebrate his first Mass at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 15 at St. Francis de Sales Parish in Manistique.

Sample will then appoint him to serve as an associate pastor of a parish in the Diocese of Marquette.

Christmas Bird Count slated

MARQUETTE - The 65th annual Marquette Christmas Bird Count will begin at 8 a.m. Dec. 15 at Mattson Lower Harbor Park. Birders of all abilities are welcome, and new participants will be paired with experienced counters. There is no cost to take part in the count.

Participants also may count birds at their home feeders by pre-registering and requesting a tally sheet. The Marquette count circle covers a 7.5- mile radius centered on the Old City Hall on Washington Street in downtown Marquette.
