MANISTIQUE - The Manistique Emeralds opened their wrestling season on a positive note Wednesday night, outlasting the Kingsford Flivvers 40-36 and topping the Munising Mustangs 52-12.
Manistique's Cheyenne Shaver pinned Kingsford's Gabe Rowell 88 seconds into the 189-pound bout, giving the Emeralds an insurmountable 40-24 advantage.
The Emeralds trailed 24-16 after the 145 match before taking the next four by pin.
"We told the guys it would come down to Shaver's match," said Emeralds' coach Gary Bowman. "Cheyenne fought off his back and got the pin. It was close."
Manistique's Mat Gonzalez (152) won both of his matches by pin and Cole Gonzalez (135) gained a pair of victories.
"Starting 2-0 is good," said Bowman. "You count on certain people to win and hope somebody else comes through. And our experienced guys came through and we got the extra win from Shaver.
"We had only one kid who didn't get a match in. Otherwise, everybody else got to wrestle at least once and that's what we wanted."
Kingsford won the opener, topping Munising 48-18. The Emeralds wrestle next Saturday in St. Ignace.
