Sophomore Colla hits huge shot for NMU women's hoops against Walsh

NORTH CANTON, Ohio - Northern Michigan University sophomore guard Alyssa Colla hit a jumper with four seconds on the clock in North Canton, Ohio on Thursday to give the Wildcats women's basketball team a 58-57 victory over Walsh University in the GLIAC opener for both schools.

The Wildcats, who are 4-1 overall, will remain in Ohio to square off against Malone University at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Both Canton area universities are in their first year of GLIAC play.

Colla led the Wildcats with 10 points as the only NMU scorer in double figures. She hit four field goals and went 2 for 3 from the free throw line.

Sophomores Lauren Gruber and Maria Almquist each had nine points while sophomore Abbey DeBruin had eight points off the bench.

Gruber, who finally got the Wildcats on the scoreboard five minutes into the game, led NMU in rebounding with seven all on the defensive end. Sophomore Courtney Lemon had six rebounds.

NMU, which turned the ball over 24 times, shot 22 of 48 for 45.8 percent and was 9 of 11 from the free throw line.

The Wildcats trailed at halftime 25-24, but jumped out of the locker room to a five-point lead early in the second half.

Gruber tied the game for NMU at 56-56 with 1:29 remaining. Walsh hit one of two free throws with 14 seconds left for a one-point lead.

The Cavaliers' Maggie Berry led all scorers with 16 points.
