It's a situation no one would want to be in: Judy Parrish is in desperate need of a heart transplant.
Big Bay resident Parrish, a longtime community volunteer, is in the process of undergoing tests for the transplant with support from her husband, Jeff, who has been part of the Powell Township ambulance service for some 25 years.
Judy Parrish already survived a battle with breast cancer, only to be faced with this latest medical challenge.
But the community is stepping forward to help.
Big Bay residents Sandy and Gary Vargo are spearheading an effort to help the Parrish family. That effort includes a benefit dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the fire/ambulance hall in Big Bay.
Admission will be by donation, with no set charge.
Already many have donated food, silent auction items and gift baskets, so what organizers are really hoping for is a crowd to attend the benefit.
We urge anyone able to make the trip to Big Bay Sunday to do so.
Those who cannot make it to the event still can help.
T-shirts in support of the Parrish family are being sold for $15, not just at the benefit Sunday, but online anytime. Visit www.letskeepherheartbeating.org to find out more.
Also, donations can be made at Wells Fargo Bank, 3220 U.S. 41 West, Marquette, account number 8354897251.
The Parrish family is enduring a stressful wait but must be uplifted by knowing their neighbors throughout the Upper Peninsula care about them, as shown by people's willingness to help in this time of most dire need.
Please join us in wishing Judy and her loved ones all the best.
