MARQUETTE - Michigan State Police troopers have released the name of a 35-year-old Gwinn man lodged in the Marquette County Jail on several charges, stemming from his alleged involvement in a hit-and-run accident Monday, which injured a Gwinn woman.
Peter Paul Jaukkuri is being held in the Marquette County Jail on a bond of 10 percent of $12,500. He pleaded not guilty Tuesday at his arraignment on three charges in Marquette County District Court.
Jaukkari is charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, second offense; leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and driving with a suspended license. He is scheduled next for a Nov. 15 pretrial conference.
Michigan State Police troopers from the Negaunee post said the incident was reported at about 8 p.m. Monday and occurred in West Branch Township in the parking lot of the Shoppette Store at K.I. Sawyer.
Police said Jaukkuri was allegedly driving a Chevrolet Cavalier, which struck Elizabeth Kohtala, 27, who was taken to Marquette General Hospital by Skandia EMS, where she was treated and later released.
Police said the incident resulted from a disturbance in the parking lot involving Jaukkuri. Troopers said he was throwing bottles, yelling and being disruptive.
When Jaukkuri was leaving the parking lot in his car, he backed up abruptly, striking Kohtala, police said.
"He pinned her between his car and another car," said Sgt. Kevin Dowling.
Troopers said Kohtala was an innocent bystander and the Jaukkuri fled after allegedly striking her.
Aided by witness statements, including reports of the license plate number, troopers were able to identify and locate Jaukkari a short time after the incident at a Sawyer residence in Forsyth Township.
