MIDLAND - The Northern Michigan University women's cross country team finished fourth out of 16 teams at the GLIAC Cross Country Championships on Saturday at the Maple Leaf Golf Course near downstate Midland.

The Wildcats, who scored 139 points, finished behind Grand Valley State (25), Ferris State (84) and Wayne State (124).

Mandy Dye paced the Wildcats in the meet, finishing 19th in 22:14.2 over the 6-kilometer course.

Mallory Cellaya was in 22nd, just three seconds behind Dye.

"We had a great day today," NMU head coach Jenny Ryan said. "The women ran smart and strong with great finishes. Everyone had personal bests on the day."

Larissa Halonen came in at 22:28.9 to finish third for the Cats and 31st overall. Two seconds away from Halonen was freshman Megan Edic in 32nd.

"The team ran in a pack and pushed each other all the way," Ryan added. "The team results were tight between third and seventh and we just finished strong. It sets us up well for the regional championship in two weeks."

Northern now prepares for the NCAA Midwest Regional in Kenosha, Wis., on Nov. 3. The top five teams from the regional qualify for the NCAA Championship on Nov. 18.
