Can you feel the excitement in the air? It's there because three Marquette County high school football teams are going to be continuing their seasons in the Michigan High School Athletic Association's playoffs next weekend.
Marquette Senior High School, Ishpeming High School and Negaunee High School have all qualified for the postseason along with a number of other Upper Peninsula schools.
The players, the coaches and the fans will be watching anxiously as the MHSAA playoff field is announced at 6 p.m. Sunday in a special being shown on Fox Sports Detroit. That's when the schools will find out for certain who the opponent will be and when and where the first-round game will take place.
Football season is a time when communities come together to support their district's boys of autumn.
And schools who have done especially well gain the privilege of hosting a game or two, meaning a boon for businesses in their communities as visitors from the opposing team's school stop for gas, meals and other items.
There's nothing quite like watching a football game when there's a nip of fall in the air and stands filled with partisan fans, rooting their sons, brothers, grandsons and neighbors on to victory.
Good luck to the Redmen, Hematites and Miners as they begin their quests to bring home a state football title in 2012, each in a different division. We share in your excitement and know that all of you will have fans across district lines, cheering you on.
