Revealing the reveal

MARQUETTE - Redline has been a popular band in the Marquette area for years. But with several group members living and working in Wisconsin, it is difficult for the band to book a lot of gigs.

Thus the impetus for the creation of The Reveal, which includes several members of the still-active Redline and adds some other local musical talent.

"Redline is still a band," said Jeff Green, who is in that group. "But with two guys living down by Milwaukee, it was tough to get together to book gigs, let alone to be able to practice. At 45 years old, I know I am not going to get discovered. We wanted to be able to play more. So that's what got The Reveal started."

Green does vocals and guitar for The Reveal and brought to the band someone who he has played music with his whole life.

"Jeff (Burbey) is my cousin so our connection is our families and our love of music," Green said. "I have played with Jeff at various times, like at family get-togethers, and I knew he'd be a good fit."

For Burbey, a lifelong Marquette resident, becoming the bass player for The Reveal was a little bit of a change.

"I have been playing the guitar since I was in the eighth grade," Burbey said. "In The Reveal, I do bass and vocals and it has been a lot of fun. We get to practice once a week or so and we're adding a lot of different music to the mix."

Green said Burbey is being humble.

"Jeff is an excellent bass player," Green said. "And he sings well. With him and with Derek (Peterson) on keyboards, it has really opened things up for us and that's been great."

Green described the band's music as "dance rock."

"We play rock from the 70s, 80s and 90s, everything from southern rock to Flock of Seagulls," he said. "It's a wide variety."

Jim Peterson, the lead guitar player for both bands, is happy to be part of The Reveal.

"We are able to play more often and practice more often," he said, adding with a grin. "We're not getting any younger."

But youth was added to the lineup with the addition of Peterson's son Derek.

Derek, 18, is enjoying being a part of The Reveal.

"It's really fun. There's such a laid-back feel, not too much pressure," Derek Peterson said. "It's nice to be a part of this group."

The younger Peterson has played as a singer-songwriter on own.

"With them, I get to play harder rock," he said. "When I was playing with people my own age, there were not as many venues that would let us play."

His father is thrilled with what Derek brings to the band as a keyboard player.

"It's another dimension. It allows us to do more stuff," Jim Peterson said. "And we do a couple of Derek's originals so that opens things up too."

Drummer Dennis Boyle has enjoyed the change The Reveal has brought to what he does.

"It's challenging," he said. "There's a lot of different music we do now. With us all being here in town, we get to practice more. We put our own twist on music people might already know. We get to be creative."

Boyle, who said he took up drumming because as a kid "I couldn't play hockey in the summer," said the crowd's reaction to The Reveal has been encouraging.

"We get compliments from many," he said. "We get positive feedback from just about everybody and that's really neat."

The Reveal's next gig will be the Halloween Party in My Place Lounge at Marquette's Holiday Inn Saturday, Oct. 27.
