Nancy Elizabeth (Leinonen) Maki

ISHPEMING, Mich. - Nancy Elizabeth (Leinonen) Maki, age 80, of 625 N. Sixth St., Ishpeming, where she resided for the past 50 years, passed away on Tuesday, October 9, 2012 while a patient in the CCU at Marquette General Hospital where she had been a patient for the past 10 days.

Nancy was born September 14, 1932 in Ishpeming the daughter of the late Eino and Mary (Hietamaki) Leinonen. She was a graduate of the Negaunee High School, Class of 1950 and was a lifelong area resident. Nancy worked at the H.W. Gossard Co. for 5 years and at Gustafson's Store in Ishpeming for 2 years. Nancy was a homemaker who always kept a clean and organized home and enjoyed tending to her indoor house plants. Being raised in the great depression era Nancy was very frugal and economical, always enjoying cooking and being able to feed the people around her. She loved discussing politics and women's rights, attending picnics, and would pass time by doing crossword puzzles. Nancy possessed a strong Finnish spirit and enjoyed her independence. She could often be found shopping at the downtown Jim's store, often buying Trenary Toast which she ate daily, or at the Snyder's Drug Store on Highway 41. A highlight of her life was being chosen as a court room spectator in the movie "Anatomy of a Murder". She enjoyed her family trip to Rapid City, South Dakota in 1968 and a trip to Casper, Wyoming in 1986 to see her daughter Mary. Upon Mary's return to this area in 1995, mother and daughter formed a very loving and caring relationship. She loved her poodles Mimi and Bebe, along with her cats especially Mary's cat Missy.

Nancy is survived by her daughter Mary Rae Maki of Ishpeming, a niece Jenny (Bob) Hodge and a nephew Skipper Leinonen, several cousins- Joanne, Susan, Mary Cristine, along with dear friends Michelle and Katie of Ishpeming and Mary Jane Anderson of National Mine. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Jack Leinonen.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Friday, October 12, 2012 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with Unitarian Universalist Celebrant Nancy Irish to officiate. The family will greet relatives and friends from 10:00am until the time of services on Friday at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home.
