NMU hands out team awards, Coreau named hockey’s MVP

MARQUETTE — Northern Michigan University has released the list of individual awards handed out Saturday at the Student-Athlete Awards Banquet.

This list does not include other team awards handed out, specifically for sports like football and hockey, which both have a laundry list of awards named in honor of former players.

The awards handed out on Saturday were MVP, top newcomer, most improved, and scholar athlete of the year.

Below is the list of NMU hockey awards for 2013, with junior goaltender Jared Coreau — now with the Detroit Red Wings — as the team MVP.

Gary Emmons Most Valuable Player Award: Jared Coreau, G, Jr.

Steve Weeks Unsung Hero Award: Scott Macaulay, D, Sr.

Dallas Drake Defensive Player of the Year Award: C.J. Ludwig, D, Jr.

Dennis Subilsky Senior Award: Scott Macaulay, D, Sr.

Tom Laidlaw Best Defenseman Award: C.J. Ludwig, D, Jr.

Bill Joyce Best Forward Award: Matt Thurber, F, Sr.

Don Waddell Best Freshman Award: Darren Nowick, F, Fr.

Ed Ward Most Improved Player Award: Erik Higby, F, Jr.

Plus/minus Award: Ryan Trenz, D, Fr.

Scholar Athlete Award: Kory Kaunisto, F, Sr.
