CCHA semifinals: Notre Dame tops Ohio State 3-1 at Joe Louis Arena
March 23, 2013 - Matt Wellens
DETROIT— The Notre Dame Fighting Irish scored two third-period goals to beat Ohio State 3-1 and advance to their third CCHA Championship game in the Jeff Jackson era, having won two Mason Cups in their two previous trips at Joe Louis Arena under the guidance of the former Lake Superior State head coach.
"I was obviously very pleased with our effort tonight," said Jackson, who took over as ND head coach in 2005. "I thought we played a good 60 minute hockey game. Peter's (Schneider) goal right after Ohio State scored was huge for us to get our confidence right back."
OSU took a 1-0 lead 9:56 into the first period on a goal by Ryan Dzingel, but the Irish responded 56 seconds later with a tying score by Peter Schneider.
ND forward TJ Tynan scored the game-winning goal on the power play 3:50 into the third period with assists from David Gerths and Sam Calabrese.
Tynan then assisted on the clinching goal with 1:05 to play as Jeff Costello was able to take advantage of an empty net with OSU goaltender Brady Hjelle on the bench.
Hjelle, the senior All-CCHA first-team netminder, made 41 saves compared to the 16 saves made by ND's Steven Summerhayes.
"We were just pressuring to get a lot of shots on net and obviously he stopped a lot of them," Tynan said. "I was lucky to put one in and we got the win."
