NMU Hockey Series Snapshot: Western Michigan hosts NMU in a series that has no connection to Vietnam

November 30, 2012 - Matt Wellens

MARQUETTE — At Western Michigan, there is a goalie ... goalie I wanna tell ya about. Goalie by the name of Frank Slubowski. At least that was the handle his loving parents gave him, but he never had much use for it himself. Mr. Slubowski, the Lawson Lunatics call him “Frank the Tank” or “The Big Slubowski.”

Slubowski, who sources say is housebroken, paid homage those nicknames given to him by his cinephile fans on his mask this season, with one side showing a tank representing Will Ferrell’s Character ‘Frank the Tank’ from Old School.

The other side is what really ties the mask together, however, with Jeff Bridges from the 1998 film, The Big Lebowski.

Of course, the Bridges side of the mask forced nihilists — not Nazis, Donny — like myself and Puck Daddy’s Harrison Mooney to write stupid blog posts weaving in references from the movie.

Which, you know, is just, like, your opinion, man.’s David Drew and his bread, who were in a unique position to confirm or disconfirm the suspicion about the mask, wrote about it back in late August.

This week, in between the occasional acid flashback and story debunking the latest WMU football coach search rumors, Drew highlighted WMU sophomore defenseman Jordan Oesterle, who leads the Broncos with a plus-minus rating of plus-2 with senior Dane Walters.

Now I have some information for you — a plus-2 rating is by no means impressive for a defenseman at this point in the season. For example, senior Scott Macaulay leads all NMU defensemen at plus-5 while junior Wade Epp is at plus-3.

Macaulay was named the CCHA Defenseman of the Week after registering a goal and two assists against Alaska over the weekend. His game winner in OT of Friday’s game left the Nanooks in a world of pain.

The mediocre plus-minus ratings of NMU and Western defensemen could explain why neither head coach this weekend — Andy Murray at WMU and Walt Kyle at NMU — is being very un-dude-like about their goaltending, which is not living up the the preseason hype.

For a frame of reference, Slubowsky, the CCHA Rookie of the Year last season and a 2012-13 preseason All-CCHA first-team selection, ranks in the bottom half of the league in save percentage and goals against average. The same goes for the Wildcats’ Jared Coreau.

Game notes for Northern Michigan can be found here.

The Broncos’ athletic department notes can be found here.

WMU offers a live online video of Friday and Saturday’s games is available for a fee. A day pass is $8.95 while a monthly pass is $10.95.

NMU and 100.3 FM The Point also offer a far out and free online audio feed with Dave Danis on the call.

After writing this blog post, I’ll probably spend the weekend watching The Big Lebowski on repeat over and over. Maybe I’ll even do some bowling, but not on Saturday. I'm shomer shabbos.

There’s two solid Twitter follows in Kalamazoo this weekend in MLive’s Drew and Western SID Adam Bodnar. Give them a follow for updates. They are good men, and thorough.
