NMU Football Game Day Guide: Wildcats hit the road one last time at Northwood

October 27, 2012 - Matt Wellens

MARQUETTE — After a one week absence (sorry), your NMU Football Game Day Guide returns just in time for the Northern Michigan University football team’s final road trip of the season to Northwood.

Today’s game in downstate Midland kicks off at noon.

The Wildcats are coming off two strong back-to-back performances against two of the GLIAC’s premiere teams.

Two weeks ago, the Wildcats picked up their first conference win of the season, upsetting Grand Valley State at the Superior Dome.

Last week, NMU carried that momentum into Detroit, and while it showed up a little late, the Wildcats nearly knocked off the 2011 NCAA Division II national runners up of Wayne State in a 38-31 loss.

While players like senior quarterback Cody Scepaniak and junior running back Casey Cotta have stepped up to fill the void of the injured and suspended, a Sault Ste. Marie native has been one of the more remarkable stories the past two weeks.

I’m of course talking about senior Wildcat defensive tackle Zach Anderson, who has played the last two weeks on a sprained ankle. High ankle sprains are not easy to play on, yet Anderson has made big play after big play.

Over at Northwood University in Midland, Mich., the Timberwolves are trying to end a downward spiral, similar to what NMU encountered last year.

The Timberwolves opened the season with four wins, but those victories came against GLVC bottom dweller Quincy and some of the worst the GLIAC South has to offer in Tiffin, Notre Dame College and Walsh, who have a combined six wins this season and three are by Walsh.

Northwood has been outscored 120-80 in its four losses, all against GLIAC North rivals Wayne State, Saginaw Valley State, Michigan Tech and Grand Valley State.

Welcome to reality Northwood, or should we say, welcome to the level of competition NMU is playing.
