Postal delays not acceptable

To the Journal editor:

So let me see if I have this right. Just as mail-in voting has taken off, not only in Michigan but nationwide what with the COVID-19 pandemic, President Trump’s appointed head of the postal service, Louis DeJoy, is actively gutting that organization.

He calls it “restructuring,” dismissing or reassigning 23 officials on a Friday (Aug. 7) which seems standard operating procedure for this administration. This kind of a scenario — having a hand-picked crony oversee such a thing during an election year — smacks of corruption, comic book evil, yet it’s really happening. The Republicans have been silent as usual for yet another of Trump’s systematic dismantling of the government (doing nothing about the firing of the inspector generals immediately comes to mind, and lest we forget acquitting him after they painfully had to wait for the impeachment in the Senate to finish). DeJoy claims that the mail will not be delayed.

Does anyone in their right mind really believe that, given the track record of this administration, and for that matter, the (in)action of Republicans in Congress over Trump’s activities? Our own senator, Gary Peters, has started an investigation into any postal delays. I hope he finds nothing untoward. I hope he holds LaJoy accountable.
