Many supported pancake breakfast

To the Journal editor:

Again this year our community saw the Lions Club motto, “We Serve” put into action when the Marquette Lions served over 200 pancake breakfast meals to hungry folks March 18.

The annual Lions Club fundraiser donates 100 percent of the proceeds to a different beneficiary each year. Recognizing the need in our community, the Marquette Club chose JJ Packs to serve this year. You may have seen Lions selling pancake breakfast tickets at Econo Foods, Super One Foods, or at your church.

Thanks to everyone who purchased tickets, and/or made a cash donation!

This year we sported a fun “Finnish Flair” with traditional Finnish fare. Traditional and Finnish pancakes were being flipped by Lions in the kitchen, volunteers rolled up their sleeves and kept coffee cups filled, Lions bussed tables and served pancakes, eggs and sausage.

Much of the food was donated by local businesses including; Econo Foods; Super One Foods Marquette; Great Lakes Fresh Market; Holiday Station Store in Marquette; Marquette Baking Company; Huron Mountain Bakery; Joe’s Cakes; Walmart; Thill’s Fish House; Jilbert’s Dairy; and Trenary Toast.

Gift cards and cash donations were made by Dead River Coffee; Johnson Glass Cleaning; Touch of Finland; Garden Bouquet; Babycakes; Marquette Baking Co; Jean Kay’s Pasties; Everyday Wines; and Thrivent Financial Services.

Beautiful, fresh carnations supplied by Lutey’s Flower Shop at a discount to decorate the tables. Thank you all!

Pancakes were only part of the fun. A live radio broadcast donated by Kirk from RRN, entertainment donated by Pierre Ogea, Derrell Syria, Cliff Porter, Tanya Stanaway, Aaron Joki and our own Marquette Lion Pauli Kniivila.

Adding to the fun was a “Find the Lions” placemat challenge and an hourly 50/50 drawing.

Additional thank you to The Mining Journal, the Marquette Monthly, The Action Shopper, RRN and Great Lakes Radio among various other media that helped publicize our event.

The Marquette Lions Club would like to thank our community for “stepping up” to support JJ Packs. Special thanks to the volunteers who pack food & send it home with our community’s hungry children every week at every school in our district!

If you want to volunteer, or make a donation to help JJ Packs or the Marquette Lions Club, contact us at marquettelions@gmail.com or 906-360-7747. There is always a need and your help is always appreciated.
