Hospital plays key role in community

To the Journal editor:

Here is another … look (at) our hospital and nurses. This is important because health care affects everyone in our community. It affects the hospitals, doctors, nurses and everyone associated with health care.

And the patients, but it also affects the businessman who wants to see the area grow with new people whether they be permanent or tourists. Let the letters come from everyone far and wide.

Obviously, the hospital has a limitless supply of money and this money, we all know, is a great source of strength and power. But another source of strength is a number of people joined together in a common cause.

The more people who take a side in this issue, the better. Certainly, a hospital like any other business has a right to run itself efficiently. We can all see the many benefits this has given. Examples are cures for illnesses in the medical field, or in the production field, the assembly line.

But let us be fair and also call to mind the many benefits unions have given us like the general dignity of the worker and the 40-hour week.

We can all call to mind glaring examples of great harm to mankind caused by both business and union. My purpose here is mainly to bring to everyone’s mind the fact that we all have a great interest in this problem and should carefully watch that it is solved in a manner beneficial to all.

We should see more newspaper articles about this subject. It would be to our collective advantage if everyone involved in this would have representation on a committee to oversee the functioning of health care in our community.

I do not expect the hospital to give up its right to make a profit, but it would be constantly reminded of the strength of a number of people who are affected by it and are watching over it.

After all, we do want the hospital to operate efficiently, which means it must make money. We also must have it operate effectively, which means it must provide health care and save lives.

There is no single person or group of people with a singular goal that can do both. We must have a group of people from diverse goals come together to do this. Will it be the hospital or the union that will make an honest effort to organize this group?
