Letters to the Editor: Fourth celebration a great success

To the Journal editor:

We celebrated the 241st birthday of our nation on the Fourth of July and the Marquette area celebrated it in great style. The events included the International Food Festival, music, parade, fireworks and a 50/50 raffle plus an opportunity for friends and classmates to reunite and socialize.

While we celebrated the “Greatest 4th in the North” with a great party — great parties just don’t happen. The event takes hours of planning. The Fourth of July Umbrella Committee made up of the Exchange, Kiwanis, and Rotary Clubs, along with the Downtown Development Authoprity, Fireworks Committee and volunteers from the city and the townships of Chocolay and Marquette helped to coordinate this celebration. These groups along with the large number of individuals who give of their time, talent and the financial support make this all happen.

We want to give a special thanks to the personnel of the 652nd Engineer Co. of the U.S. Army Reserve stationed in Chocolay Township and the 1437th Engineer Multi-Role Bridge Co. of the Michigan National Guard (MRBC) stationed in Sault Ste. Marie for their time, effort and expert involvement.

We would also like to thank The Mining Journal for all of its help in keeping the public informed and update on activities.

I personally want to thank all those who have given me and the committee so much assistance and support these past years to make this event work.

Planning for the 2018 Fourth of July celebration will begin this August and the Marquette Area Chamber of Commerce will be helping to coordinate and organize the funding and logistics of next year’s celebration.

Once again, thank you all for what you do to make this celebration and the Marquette area a great place to live, raise a family and settle.

Thank you.
