Taxes are needed

To the Journal editor:

It’s bad news that the library hours at Peter White Public Library have to be curtailed. And it’s also bad news that there’s a line between reduction in library services and Duke LifePoint, as well as other big box retailers in the Marquette area.

Peter White Public Library has been nationally recognized for its excellence and always by those in the area who have come to know the value of a library to a community.

When the library opens in the morning, there’s a line waiting, even in frigid temperatures. For a sample of what kinds of services are provided, a quick look at the website is all that’s needed, and it would take up the whole editorial page to describe them all.

But I would like to focus on one: literacy. Children who are taken to the library for books and programs have a very good chance of growing up with good reading skills and doing well in school. Good schools, good libraries are tax supported, non-profit institutions open to all.

They are foundational to creating a community that works, a community where people want to live. The anti-tax at-all-cost mindset is costing us all in this and other public concerns.
