Safety needs here

To the Journal editor:

A situation involving emergency access to homes in Alger County’s Laughing Whitefish Point development in Onota Township could be a problem for residents elsewhere as well.

Access to homes and other structures is critical to emergency responders. Life and property are on the line. Equipment needs 12-plus feet of road width to access the buildings and turn around. Complacency has no place here.

You need to get involved and check your home. Township and county commissioners kick the can down the road. Voice your views to all of them. Fire insurance is adjusted with higher costs. All life is on the line. Let’s get it right. Dozens of permits are required for building.

No permits for ingress and egress are required, but should be. Safeguarding of life and property should be a foremost priority. You should have the fire department check your site.

Answer: Ingress and egress permits and the safety is the government’s responsibility.
