Quality child care the ‘backbone’ of our economy

Money the government spends on families, especially cash that helps to improve things for children, has historically gained our support.

That’s the case with the UPWARD Talent Council being one of 16 recipients of a Regional Child Care Planning grant of $150,000 from the Early Childhood Investment Corporation’s Child Care Innovation Fund.

The $150,000 will help expand child care options, serve more families and lower costs for parents.

News of this broke late last week and included a written statement from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Whitmer observed that good, reliable, affordable child care is the “backbone” of the economy.

“Access to quality, affordable child care supports parents as they work, ensures kids have the support they need to grow into their best selves and help businesses hire, recruit and retain talent,” Whitmer said in the press release. “To achieve these big goals, we need everyone to pitch in.”

Whitmer added: “Together, we will build our vision to ensure every family has access to child care that meets their need.”

As a response to Michigan communities not having sufficient child care options to meet demands, the state is investing $100 million to increase access to child care across the state.

According to an accompanying press release, the state hopes to open 1,000 new or expanded child care programs by the end of 2024.

As a general proposition, this initiative has enjoyed bi-partisan support. And for good reason. Without decent child care, workers cannot work and businesses and families suffer.

It’s a step in the right direction.
