Big weekend of community events coming up

Summer is almost over but that doesn’t mean fun times are over. Not by a longshot.

This weekend, there are many things going on in Marquette County. We will highlight four of them:

≤ There’s the Marji Gesick, in its fifth year of challenging runners and bikers on some tough trails.

According to its website, marjigesick.com, the event has been described by Jeremiah Bishop as “the hardest single-day mountain bike event in the country.”

It includes a 100-mile run, which starts at noon Friday; a 100-mile bike that starts at 7:30 a.m. Saturday; a 50-mile run starting at 7 a.m. Saturday; and 50-mile and 15-mile bikes starting at 8 a.m. Saturday.

The 100-mile events begin at the Forestville Noquemanon Trail Network Pole Barn, which the other races are launching from Lakeshore Boulevard in front of the Ore Dock structure (not the tavern).

Ishpeming is the destination.

The Marji Gesick has set the standard for ultra mountain bike events around the country, according to its website, and the event features trail systems across Marquette County, and brings the community together every year.

It is definitely unique.

≤ Also starting early Saturday morning is the Marquette Walk to End Alzheimers. The event raises funds for care, support and research. The walk begins at 9 a.m. Saturday at Northern Michigan University’s Jacobetti Complex and is a two-mile event. Visit act.alz.org/Marquette to find out more.

≤ The Marquette Kennel Club All Breed Show is taking place today through Sunday at the Marquette County Fairgrounds. It will include all-breed competition, obedience shows and rally trials. Visit the club’s website at www.themkc.org to find out more.

≤ Then there is one of the cutest annual events in Marquette County: The Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter’s Strut Your Mutt fundraiser at Ellwood A. Mattson Lower Harbor Park in Marquette Saturday.

The 16th annual edition has registration at 10 a.m. and the walk with people and their canines at 11 a.m. Visit upaws.org for all the details.

The forecast is for lovely conditions this weekend so we encourage one and all to get out to have some fun, be it at one or more of these events, or something else going on in Superiorland.
