Giving Tuesday serves as reminder to do some good

We understand that in this year of the COVID-19 pandemic, many families are struggling due to the breadwinner being laid off or the medical costs of having a family member infected with coronavirus.

That’s why it’s vital people help nonprofit organizations kick off the season of giving on a strong note with GivingTuesday.

According to a press release from the #give906 campaign, GivingTuesday will kick off the generosity season this year by asking people to give back on Dec. 1 and throughout the year.

Some 40 organizations have registered initiatives as part of the #give906 Upper Peninsula Community Campaign. Full descriptions of each organization’s project and a link to donate or get involved can be viewed at give906.org.

Those able to help with this campaign can choose from these participating Marquette and Alger County organizations: Alger County CTC; Alger Regional Community Foundation; Camp New Day UP; Cancer Care of Marquette County; Caregiver Incentive Project; Clear Lake Education Center Stewards Group; Gospel Opportunities; Great Lakes Recovery Centers; Hiawatha Music Co-op; Lake Superior Community Partnership; Marquette County Cares Coalition (MC2); Marquette Maritime Museum; Marquette Regional History Center; Messiah Lutheran Church; NMU Foundation; STAR Children’s Bereavement Services; Steve Mariucci Family Beacon House; Superior Arts Youth Theater; Superior Health Foundation; Superior Housing Solutions; Superior String Alliance; The New Free Store; U.P. Girl Scouts; Upper Peninsula Land Conservancy; and YMCA of Marquette County

There may be additional organizations added as their information is received.

What is hoped to happen next is for donors and volunteers to share with the hashtag #give906 how they gave locally.

For those unaware, GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world.

“GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Over the past eight years, it has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity,” organizers said in the announcement.

“Whether it’s making someone smile, helping a neighbor or stranger out, showing up for an issue or people we care about, or giving some of what we have to those who need our help, every act of generosity counts and everyone has something to give. GivingTuesday strives to build a world in which the catalytic power of generosity is at the heart of the society we build together, unlocking dignity, opportunity and equity around the globe.”

In this most difficult year, 2020, we hope those who are able to give do so with joy and those who are helped are filled with the hope they can someday return the favor.
