State must be reopened but at the right time

Trust us when we say we want the economy opened back up as much as anyone.

We believe the Marquette area, just like the rest of the state and nation, is chomping at the bit to get things back to as close to normal as they could be.

That said, opening up things too soon could spark a recurrence of COVID-19, and no one wants that.

“I am hopeful that come May 1, we will make some steps forward,” Whitmer said during a tele-town hall hosted by the Detroit Regional Chamber, a business organization, last week. “You’re the reason we’re driving this curve down.”

Whitmer noted that when she does make the decision to lift the controversial stay-at-home order, she will do it after consulting with the best medical minds available.

Whitmer didn’t identify which businesses may be allowed to open but said the restrictions will be relaxed in phases, The Associated Press reported. She said there would be many factors: indoor work or outdoor; the number of employees; their proximity to each other; and their interaction with the public.

The virus seems to be plateauing here in Michigan and elsewhere in the country. We must, for the good of the nation, hang on a bit longer.

Together, we can do this!
