Grand Island Ice Caves receive unusual recognition

A Superiorland winter attraction, well-known to locals and people who visit the local area, has received a bit of national attention in an unusual way.

The ice caves on Grand Island, located off Munising, is famous for their striking beauty. Now, that beauty has been recognized by the U.S. Postal Service which included an ice cave image in a new stamp. Release day is set for Jan. 18.

Here’s what the postal service said about its new stamp: “With this new Priority Mail Express stamp, the Postal Service celebrates the winter beauty of the Grand Island Ice Caves in Lake Superior. Located near Munising on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Grand Island is marked by massive sandstone bluffs. Impressive in any season, the bluffs are especially dramatic in winter when lake water seeps into the crevices and caverns, forming magnificent ice curtains and icicles that hang like stalactites from ceilings. The stamp art features a colorful illustration of how one of these ever-changing ice caves might appear from the inside looking out toward the west at sunset. Art director Greg Breeding designed the stamp with original art by Dan Cosgrove.”

A second stamp depicting Big Bend National Park, which borders Boquillas, Mexico, will also be released that day. The stamp art features the Rio Grande river flowing between the limestone cliffs of Santa Elena Canyon, the postal service says.

These are outstanding honors that underscore natural beauty not widely found. We are pleased the Grand Island caves have been so recognized.
